About Us

Rayner Design Pty Ltd is a mechanical engineering design consultancy founded in 1989 and based in Annandale, Sydney.

Products designed have ranged from a moulded disposable 0.1 gram paediatric ventricular vent catheter (for neonatal heart surgery) to a 4 tonne 110kW grinding mill. The only common thread between projects has been the need an unusual ammount of creativity, logical analysis and experience to produce a solution.

One key element contributing to success has been having the simplest possible team structure - one engineer - to work independantly or with your existing team.

The advantages are numerous:

- Flexibility

- Fast response

- No communication problems

- Design intent is backed by in-house analysis (FEA, dynamic analysis etc.)

- SolidWorks CAD allows workshop drawings to be done economically done by the designer

- Drawing tolerances match design intent

The ability to work smoothly with, and gather knowledge and creative input from the a client's team is essential. Sometimes the best solution comes from the client, and the ability to acknowledge and then assist with the development of these ideas is important. This process is much easier for an experienced engineer with "runs on the board".

Years of experience and a passion for engineering have produced the ability to:

- Think outside the square, when needed

- Use existing proven solutions whenever possible

- Find a choice of viable solutions to a given problem

- Recognize impossible problems quickly to avoid wasting time

- Objectively evaluate the merits of solutions from all sources

- Recognize a high proportion of potential problems in a design, allowing early correction

- Combine aesthetics with engineering to minimize the form/function compromise

- Consider part manufacture and assembly throughout the design process

- Quickly assimilate any unfamiliar technology needed to carry out a new project

- Work with existing technical teams to find the best available solution

- Respect the experience and creativity of others to help the client produce a solution

- Give credit where it's due to keep the client's team engaged with the project

- Assemble a network of reliable people and companies to do outside work

- Understand the use of machine tools from personal experience
